Charmed by the beauty of Drvengrad where he is going to shoot a film about Pancho Villa, he says: “When Emir told me that he wants me for the role of Pancho Villa, I thought that a Mexican actor would be a better choice, since Villa is the national hero. However, I am sure that Emir probably has something on his mind, some vision that he wants to realize.” After the festival opening, Kusturica and Johnny Depp spent the evening hours in the library in the director’s house, which is also an enoteca (wine collection). In this exclusive reception room, Kusturica’s family and Depp’s team spent a pleasant New Year’s Eve (according to the Julian calendar) and then moved to “Prokleta avlija” hall where they enjoyed the concert of the Austrian band “Global Kryner”. After the concert they went to the restaurant “Konak” where they tasted typical Serbian specialties, such as roast lamb, domestic smoked ham and kajmak (type of Serbian cream). The Hollywood actor drank red wine from the cellar of the Serbian wine producer Rasa Magelan.
At one point, the actor took a camera from his personal photographer and started taking pictures of the people around him. When he was asked for the reason, he answered: “People take photos of me all the time, why wouldn’t I take photos of you?” Depp, Kusturica and their escort continued their private party in the same restaurant until late at night.
“He is a man with a secret. Hollywood mostly creates people who win people over with their attractive appearances and action, while Johnny Depp fascinates the audience with his personality and spirituality,” Kusturica paid compliments to his renowned guest. Talking about his impressions about Serbia, Depp said: “What I like about Serbia is its spirit and a sense of pride. Spirit is a very complicated word. Spirit. Independence. Pride. These are the things that I respect most,” said the famous Johnny Depp shortly after he arrived in Serbia.

Before he left Mokra Gora last week, the famous American actor Johnny Depp held a film workshop for young artists. “Blic” reveals what advice Depp gave to the young actors.
When they were informed that the workshop will be closed and dedicated only to them, students started to book their places in a big hall of “Prokleta avlija” cinema much in advance. All the places were soon booked and apart from the students whose films competed for the festival awards, numerous students from Serbian film academies and from the region also attended the workshop. Instead of a usual and expected workshop in which Depp would disclose secrets of his trade and acting techniques, students had an opportunity to talk to the great actor and ask him about different things related to his professional and private life. “You have an opportunity to see a man who did not conquer Hollywood at once and become rich and famous. He has a unique personality and consistency which prevented Hollywood from crushing him,” said Emir Kusturica at the opening of the workshop. “I am glad that I have arrived at this kind of festival and I am pleasantly surprised with everything I have seen so far. Festivals that I have attended in the last several years have become a way of making a network of people and need to buy or sell something,” said Depp, who was impressed by a possibility of meeting future authors. Students soon started to ask the guest and it turned into a spontaneous chatting. They also talked about the beginning of Depp’s career, about the way he builds the characters he is playing, about directors with whom he used to work. Answering the question what his biggest problem is when he is preparing a role, Depp answered: “During the shooting, my biggest problem is when it is impossible to introduce some humor in the role I am doing. Even in the darkest moments I always try to find some entertaining and comic moments. That is the reason why I find the serious roles very difficult. The expression “serious actor” is not logical. It is impossible and without any sense, because acting is playing, inventing.” After an almost two-hour conversation with students in which he talked about his private life and fame in Hollywood, Depp unexpectedly unpretentiously gave advice to the future film authors: “You will never achieve some goal if you don’t ask from yourself more. If you relax, that is the end. Fearing and self-reflection are extremely healthy. You need to analyze situations. Sometimes life under pressure is useful because it makes us be better and more realistic people,” Depp said.
