He gave the world Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride, but Tim Burton could be forgiven nerves over his latest film Alice In Wonderland.

It is a brave man who takes a much-loved tale and gives it a twist. But that is exactly what Burton has done in his forthcoming and much-anticipated film. When it is released on March 5, audiences will discover that Alice has finally grown up.

And she's not the only one. As our exclusive interview with Johnny Depp (above) reveals, the actor derived great satisfaction in transforming the Mad Hatter from a one-dimensional caricature into a nuanced, if orange-coiffed, paragon tormented by the effects of mercury poisoning.

The film presents a much darker third episode in the character's life, in which Alice, now 19, confronts issues such as marriage and women's role in Victorian society, before disappearing with the White Rabbit.

So what will the reaction of the fans be?

Lewis Carroll's Alice, the heroine of the original Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass books, is one of the best-known and most-loved characters ever created. The stories, with their mixture of fantasy, nonsense, gentle humour and innocence, and populated as they are by talking animals and outrageous individuals, have captured the imaginations of generations of children - and quite a few adults as well. There are fan clubs from Japan to America, and even on Facebook.

Many may be wondering if the gentle world inspired by Oxford colleges and Thames riverbanks is in danger of being destroyed forever.

But if anyone can make an adaptation work, Burton can. Over the past few decades, he has created a niche for himself - and become one of Hollywood's most successful directors - by reinventing fairytales and giving them a darker twist. From his early successes with Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands to Corpse Bride, his approach has brought him critical and audience acclaim.

Burton's Alice in Wonderland will certainly be darker than the original - just look at the images in our slideshow (left) - but it could well become as much a part of the cannon as Carroll's classic if the director is able to repeat his past success and bring the characters alive for a new audience.

Alice in Wonderland opens on March 5 in Europe.
